Trader Joe's Glutened me!
« on: June 11, 2007, 10:41:54 PM »
I have been a fan of Trader Joe's since long before I was diagnosed, and I applaud their efforts to carry and make information available to celiacs re: GF food. I will continue to shop their stores. However, I am a bit annoyed about a recent experience.

My local store was sampling some chicken sausages with a spicy mustard, which looked very good. I asked the employee handing them out if she knew if they were gluten-free. She said yes, they are, and we got into a long discussion about celiac disease, during which I told her about this website. During this conversation, I tried the said sausage with mustard, and put some of each into my cart.

I recall feeling ill later that day, and passing it off as a mild stomach virus.  Today, when I went to prepare some of these sausages, I pulled the mustard out of the pantry only to read "wheat flour" as the last ingredient listed. I promptly called Trader Joe's, to let them know of the issue, and a very apologetic manager asked me to come see him tomorrow.

Lesson to be learned: Don't take people's word. Read labels yourself.

Wow, I guess this could have happened anywhere, but with Trader Joe's catering as they do to celiacs you were more inclined to trust them, as I would have been.

This reminds me of my first 2 rules for a gluten-free diet:

1)  Always read the ingredients
2)  Refer to rule # 1

I'm sorry this happened to you, Nurse Gwen, but thanks for posting this warning.

That the disease allows no grace, no forgiveness for an error is what can get me discouraged.  One blink and the deed is done and the penalty to be paid. . . . .

Wow!  I'm usually reticent to sample foods at stores and this reminds me why.  I'm so sorry you had to go through that discomfort.

Carol,

I would hate to see someone pass over a sample of a truly gluten free food because of what happened to me, since I really believe we should not limit ourselves more than the celiac disease already does.  But in the future, if I choose to do so, I will personally read the label(s) of the food(s) involved!
