Help with understanding results of sons biopsy
« on: January 10, 2010, 03:04:54 PM »
My son (he is 8) recently had blood work done. The blood work came back with one reading normal and one reading normal but on the high side. Our GI decided on the biospy of his small intestine .  The results for this were supposedly normal but there were acute and chronic inflammatory cells present that the doc was not able to see during the procedure.  He said he should have been able to see this.  He then told me the inflammatory cells are not common with celiac but we are going to treat it as such and put my son on a gluten free diet. Has anyone ever had these results from a biopsy? Could the doctor be misdiagnosing my son and missing the true issue?

I can't say that I understand this comment from the doctor, but it is pretty much certain that the gluten free diet will not harm your son.  It certainly is a difficult change at first, and with young ones it can be a challenge to be sure they comply with the  restrictions.

I'm in no position to answer this, it can happen that a diagnosis is not correct, but the blood test and the biopsy via endoscopy are the two most widely used tests so your doctor seems to be doing the right things.
