GF staying with non-GF family
« on: October 04, 2009, 08:06:06 AM »
Hi!  Thanks for all the useful information I've read so far! I tried a search to find the answer to my question, but didn't have much luck; sorry if this is a question that's been discussed before.

I'm going out of town to stay with family over Thanksgiving.   Myself and my daughter are GF, and the entire rest of the fam (30+ people) are not.   I'm wondering what works best in this situation.   I don't want to inconvenience everyone  (who have never prepared a GF meal or been GF conscious before), but also do not want to sit by and eat nothing at Thanksgiving!  :)  Should I plan on grocery shopping once there and prepping my own meal?  Any advice would be awesome!  Thank you!

I suggest preparing your food in advance and taking it with you.  If you shop and prepare there you'll likely create more of a fuss 'you should have told us' 'we could have...' and you'll have to worry, and worry everyone else, about cross-contamination.  I believe these things to be about the people we share our time with and you may all stress less if you just bring your own dishes (meals) and no one has to fret.  That said, maybe make extra GF so that others can share and enjoy and then their introduction to GF is a treat rather than a burden.

Hope this helps.

Sorry, I maybe should have completed my thoughts before completing the post:  This Thanksgiving I've making and bringing the pies for dessert and vegetarian (chestnut-based) sausage rolls.  Add to that an array of veggies that everyone else may thing of as side dishes and I will be well-fed and no one had to worry.  I may make or bring crackers so that I too can have easy snacks.
