German researchers have found that genetic variations in the chromosome 4q27 region predispose to ulcerative colitis, in common with other autoimmune diseases such as celiac disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and Type 1 diabetes. I've long suspected that a common cause might one day be found that enables the development of autoimmune diseases.  It is a fact that a person with one autoimmune disease is at much greater risk of developing another autoimmune disorder.  This does seem to point to the likely existence of some underlying cause or enabling factor.
