Clinical investigations indicate that a brief period of severe gastroenteritis can cause a long-lasting complex of functional abnormalities of the gastrointestinal tract, post-inflammatory irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Post-inflammatory IBS has been modelled in animals in recent years, and in particular hyperexcitability of neurons in enteric and dorsal root ganglia have been investigated.
