PLEASE HELP!!!! Do I have CD?? PLEASE READ!! I'm begging...
« on: April 09, 2009, 06:06:30 PM »
I have had severe stomach pains accompanied by diarhea for as long as I can remember(I'm currently 29yrs. old). I have very explosve, discolored, inconsistent stool movements. I tried to figure out what specific foods triggered this but had no luck.  I have had serious migraine headaches, heart palpitations/fluttering, skin rashes (small blisters inbetween fingers and groin area), LOUD stomach gurgling/rumbling, dizziness, acid reflux, irratability, anxiety issues, small, clear blisters on the inside of my mouth, and EXTREME LETHARGY! All of these symptoms have varied in their intensity over the years but have been everlasting. I never thought for a second that they could all be related to a common disease/disorder. I never saw a doctor about this because it was very embarrassing and I expected that everything would be generalized as IBS.  I recently experienced severe anal itching which was my breaking point. I researched online and determind that I may have a pinworm infection. I observed my stool and noticed the presense of what looked like pinworms. Being a biochemist, I took a scientific aproach to this issue, otherwise I would have been so grossed out cause psychologicaly I cant deal with th idea of having worms in me. I was abe to isolate one of these tiny pinworms? from my stool. I viewed it under the microscope and sure enough....its a worm. I went right to the ER and was given Mebendazole. I sterilized my home and bought all new bedding, towels, underware, etc. I just followed up today with a GI doctor. As grossed out as I was about the worms I was excited to find that alot of the symptoms (digestive and otherwise) that I was experiencing where consistent w/ a parasitic infection. However, my GI doc didnt seem too concerned about the worm infection and has sent me for a blood test for Celiac Disease (among other things) and a stool analysis for bacteria or parasites. I had never heard of Celiacs disease before and was kinda pissed that the doc wasnt overly concerned about the worm issue. After researching Celiacs its quite possible that I do suffer from that. Are parasitic infections common with Celiac Disease? I have to go to the lab for testing tomorrow and I am extremely scared. I am confident that  I have/had a parasitic worm infection but I now think it may be coupled w/ Celiac disease!!! Two things stand out in my mind. Whenever I drank beer in the past(ive stopped drinking completely because of this) I became violently ill and it took days to recover....which may be an indication of Celiacs. Also, I can remember my father saying "You're uncle is allergic to wheat". I recently asked him again if my Uncle had Celiac Disease and his only response was that he was allergic to everything in beer. I don't think my uncle ever saw a specialist or really aggresively tried to diagnose his problems which is the approach I've been taking for years. I'm ready to take my body back! I reached a point where I thought to myself if I were to die soon that I have had a pretty full life.....AT 29!!!!! PLease help me! Any coments or suggestions or any advise is appreciated greatly! I will post the findings of my lab work once i get the results. Thanks in advance for your info!!!!!

Also - Ive read alot of posts about hypoglycemia beig associated w/ CD. Whenever I eat fruit my mouth breaks out in blisters....any connection?

First of all your Doctor is my new hero.  It is rare to hear about a Doctor considering Celiac Disease as a possibility on a first visit with a patient.  I guess all of the publicity this condition gets in the medical press these days is helping.

Since you have not adopted a gluten free diet and your symptoms are fairly severe the chances that your blood test for the signs of autoimmune reactions will produce useful information seem very good.

I'm not aware of any correlation having been observed between Celiac Disease and parasitic infections, but perhaps if your digestive system was already inflamed it might have made you more susceptible?

I suspect your Doctor is not too worried about parasites because the problem has already been identified and strategies do exist for treating it with good results.  I'm glad to hear that she or he is exploring other potential issues.

The fact that your uncle had issues with beer does suggest a hereditary connection, so I understand why you think it may be a pointer in the direction of a Celiac diagnosis.

Celiac Disease is a real pain, it forces major lifestyle changes, but the good news is that most people return to good health if they adopt a gluten free diet.

We'll be here to help if the diagnosis is made.  I hope that, one way or the other, this does get resolved for you soon.  The blistering around the mouth sounds more like an allergic reaction than Celiac Disease, but it is not at all uncommon for people with Celiac Disease to also suffer from some food allergies.  The mechanisms involved in the immune system are not the same, as you seem to know.

Please let us know how your recovery proceeds!

Good luck
Steve

Steve, thank you for your encouraging words. It's so releaving to know that I'm not alone and others experience similiar symptoms. Ive been cursing this doctor all day and have been complaining about how incompetent I thought he was. Whether my issues are a result of CD or not, this site has really eased my mind. Thank you.
