Just diganosed 5 days ago.

After having symptoms since I was sixteen, bloating, tired, anemia and lots of major headaches. After a gallbladder removal, ovarian cysts discovered and removed and a previous negative celiac test 7 years ago, finally I got a positive blood and gastroscopy last week. I am now nearly 30.

The few weeks leading up, I was extra tired and kept telling my husband I felt like I had been running a marathon. Bad Headaches were a weekly thing as well as major bloating.

To be honest don't know where to start, I stated immediately eating gluten free, continuing to take a few supplements (have been for long time just obviously not absorbing them), not seeing my GI for another couple of weeks, I think I am on the right track. Have quite a bit of reading and finding out lots so far. I feel quite achy, tired. My eyes feel sore and a little blurry. Unsure on how long recover can be.

I am also very stressed and anxious (major anxiety attacks), I have had a huge fear, my Grandmother had MS and I have read about the links with Celiac and MS and had a major breakdown last week. I have seen a neurologist to but my mind at ease, all was normal neurological test although had an MRI and results on Friday so I am praying and sure its just my fear getting the best of me and need my mind put at ease.

Can anyone suggest any supplement I should start immediately or anything to help with the recovery? I have not had any further test done to check my mineral levels or anything, I just got a phone call from my GI last Thursday night to confirm the biopsy results.

I am learning to read the packages although any tips or information on what to look for would be appreciated. Also tips on fibre intake, as I suffer major constipation and was put on a high fibre diet not so long ago with lots of high fibre grainy bread etc. and now struggling with carbs and fibre.

Breaky proving to be quite difficult.

I am eating lost of seafood, salad, veggies, steak, eggs and basmati rice.

I have found since starting the gluten free foods, I am a little light headed and headachy most of the time.

I am glad to have found the site, Thanks

Lisa

Hi Lisa,

You've been having quite a difficult time, I hope you are on the road to recovery now.

As far as fiber, diet and such go you might consider replacing the basmati rice with brown rice because it has all of the original fiber intact.  Also drink two extra glasses of water per day to help with the constipation.  Meat does not help with constipation, maybe you could eat smaller portions of meat for a while.  I'd also avoid hard cheeses.

I find that eating a breakfast with a fatty ingredient as well as some fruit helps to reduce the light headed feeling for me.  Fat and the fiber in fruit both slow down the uptake of sugars into the bloodstream.

Be on the lookout for possible temporary lactose intolerance, it often happens when people first go gluten free.

For my breakfast I often have two gluten free toaster waffles smothered with peanut butter and a small can of peaches or mandarin oranges.  The fat in the peanut butter keeps me from getting hungry again before lunch.

I recommend the book The Gluten-Free Nutrition Guide by Tricia Thompson.  It is filled with information very useful to people newly diagnosed with celiac disease and it is very well written.

I hope some of our other members will have some ideas for you too.
