Hi
I have found that Bob's Red Mill Pancake mix is GREAT!  You can barely tell the difference.  Even my 4 year old eats it.  Also, Pamela's Kitchen makes really yummy cookies.  Especially Shortbread Swirl and Chunky Chocolate Chip.

Try them out....

I hope I'm posting this correctly.  My mom likes to eat at an Omega burger. IF I address cross contamination to them, is salad without dressing safe- or are the stay fresh sprays resturants sometimes use a concern?  Carol

I would expect a salad without dressing to be safe as long as it never had any croutons in it.

Most of the salad dressing I read labels on is GF anyway, maybe they'd have some salad dressing in those small plastic tear-open packages - if so it would let you check the ingredients.

I've never heard of a problem with the sprays used to keep produce and salads fresh. They are widely used, and I'd guess that I would have heard about it if there were issues around these products.

Eat. Enjoy.

I did download the lost recommended and it is veryk helpful. Does anyone know about Heath bars?   &  My favorite sort of fast food is Trader Joes Polenta.  I add beans, cheese, salsa, many things.  It alson seems to be good for my digestion.   Does anyone ever get over this?  I mean, people lose cancer and other things.  Anyone know of anyone who  went back to wheat after the body was healed, and was o.k.? I know, wrong topic. Sorry. Matroc

As far as energy bars go, I have been buying Lara Bars at Trader Joes, very yummy and happy tummy.

Nobody ever gets over celiac disease, you must stay on a GF diet for life. The good news is that after a few years it becomes very easy, you know what you can and can't have, and you worry about it a lot less.

Matroc,

Anyone who tells you that you can "cure" or "get rid of" celiac disease is at best, mistaken, but more likely, trying to sell you something by lying to you.
That's the bad news.

The good news? Celiac disease is nothing like cancer. You don't have to feel sick, you don't have to suffer, and you certainly don't have to die from it. Out of all the diseases in the world, you have one you have TOTAL CONTROL over. If you stick to the diet, you can live a normal, healthy, happy life. It takes time to adjust, to learn the ins and outs of the diet, etc, but these days, celiacs don't have to want for anything. We can have our (gf) cake and eat it, too!!

I find the times I DO feel bad about celiac are when I'm craving something specific. So I go out and find a gf version, until I find the one I like, and I allow myself the treat.

Is there something you're craving? Perhaps we can help you out?

I agree completely with Gwen when she says:

I suggest this policy, never take any medical advice from someone who also wants to sell you something.  I make exceptions for pharmacists, who are professionals and who generally only give advice when asked for it, or when dispensing prescriptions.

As a corollary, I also suggest never believe anything that a clerk at a health food store tells you. We have one such store in our local area where the clerks seem to believe that they are qualified medical professionals. I do not share that opinion.

Has anyone tried the baked goods coming from the Gluten Free Bakehouse at Whole Foods Market?  We've just started to get the products in San Diego, but I know other areas have had them for longer, particularly out in North Carolina where they're from.

The chocolate chip cookies are terrific, better than any other store bought GF cookie I've had.  Also, their pre-baked pizza crust is the best that I've had yet.  I wasn't thrilled with the orange-cranberry scone.  They were very good, but not very scone like....I guess that's being nit-picky because they were very tasty.

I went to a presentation at Whole Foods Market by Lee Tobin, the baker who started the Gluten Free Bakehouse.  He's a celiac who happened to be a chef and baker, so he started experimenting with GF flours when he got tired of eating rice cakes.  At the presentation, he had some samples of new products they are working on.  there was a French bread that was fantastic (and I'm not a big bread person) and a Sourdough that was really good.  There was also a nut/raisin cookie and a cinammon roll that they are working on.  Now that is a guy we should thank!

one more thing along the cookie line.  The December or january issue of Gourmet Magazine had an article on gluten free cooking, which is pretty big time for us.   Almost as good as the article on the front page of the Wall Street Journal.  The article in Gourmet had a couple of GF recipes in it, including one for chocolate chip cookies.  Now, I don't know why, but good choc. chip cookies are harder to make GF than other cookies.  They either don't taste good or the consistency is all wrong.  But this recipe makes cookies that are the closest I've had to the old Nestle Toll House cookies.  I ate a dozen in one day (hey, they were small.)

Anyway, bake em up and enjoy.

I haven't tried the whole line yet, but so far I'm pleased.  The scones didn't "Wow" me, either, but I love the Ginger-Molasses cookies.  I have some of the biscuits and a carrot cake in the freezer that I haven't tackled yet.

Is there anyone out there like me who has been searching for chocolate that is gluten free, casein free AND soy free?  I finally found it at www.choclat.com.  They make some truffles for Passover gifts.  Mine are ordered as an Easter gift for myself, and in the true Christian spirit, I don't plan to share with anyone!  Scrooge

Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

Here is a link to the one we use in my house:

http://www.elanaspantry.com/2007/05/30/dairy-free-gluten-free-chocolate-chip-cookies/

These are dairy-free and gluten-free, though I have dozens of friends on regular (as opposed to GF diets) that make these as well.
