I need information
« on: January 05, 2007, 03:49:15 AM »
I have been recently diagnosed with celiac disease.  My doctor has set up an appointment with a dietician so I can get more information on my dietary needs.  So far, I have managed my diet and lifestyle very well.

I am also a hairstylist.  Many of the products I use daily and continuously throughout my day contain a wheat ingredient.  My concern is can wheat glutens be absorbed through the skin?  Can over exposure of products containing wheat ingredients cause symptoms again?  Since my diagnoses, the owner of the spa I work for has placed me with the colour team, therefore my hands are always covered with gloves.

If anyone has information on skin absorption and the celiac, please let me know.

Thank you,

Sylvia

I can't offer you a scientific answer, but I know of a number of people who avoid shampoo and conditioners if they contain gluten, including myself.

My favorite shampoo turned out to contain wheat proteins. I discovered this fact when I kept getting an itchy rash on the back of my scalp after using the shampoo. I switched to a shampoo without the wheat proteins and the rash disappeared.

Wearing gloves when handling substances containing gluten does sound like a good idea.

I was very skeptical when I first heard of people having concerns about hair care products with gluten, but after my own experience with shampoo seeming to cause a rash I have become much more cautious.
