Under D influence

While this article is not referenced from a Medical Source maybe it shouldn't be here ?
But it certainly makes for an interesting read.
Taken from the Observer Newspaper in the UK and written by John Clarke.

Vitamin D appears to be more important for our health than previously thought,
so ensuring we produce enough over the winter months is a priority.
.
Not only do the darker winter months do little for our moods,
but the lack of ultraviolet (UV) rays also deprives our body of its major source of vitamin D
a nutrient we need principally to work in conjunction with calcium to produce strong bones and teeth.
The action of the sun's UV rays on our skin stimulates the body to produce its most active and effective form
of vitamin D, known as 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol,
but between the months of October and March, few UV rays reach us,
which means that to meet the necessary levels, our bodies have to rely both on vitamin D accumulated
during the sunny months and stored in the liver and body fat, as well as far less efficient dietary sources.

Good information for people who live in locations with darker winter months.  (This doesn't include me, I live in sun-drenched Southern California, where the issue is more about year-long use of sunscreen.)

As a New Englander AND a night shift nurse, I rarely (if ever) see the sun.

My vitamin D levels are so low I am on a prescription 50,000 units of D once weekly AND a daily dose of 1200 (3 times the RDA) IU.
I've finally got a lower normal level.
