Thinking About Other Nutrition Issues in Coeliac Disease
« on: July 09, 2008, 12:52:17 AM »
It is important for individuals avoiding gluten to take a close look at
the nutritional adequacy of the foods remaining in the diet.
.
This may mean getting some help from a Registered Dietitian,
as not all the threats to complete nutrition are obvious.
Any diet that eliminates a number of common foods has the potential to leave some gaps in nutrient intake.
.
In addition to general nutritional adequacy, there are diet/nutrition factors besides gluten control
that can provide additional benefit to people with celiac disease.
.
Many chronic health conditions have an inflammatory component. CD, MS, diabetes,
rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and lupus, for example,
all have the potential to result in increased inflammation.
.
It is now recognized that inflammation is an important contributor to heart disease as well,
so the recommendations included here to decrease inflammation and to protect tissues
from the negative effects of inflammation are of great potential benefit.

This subject has been discussed quite a bit lately on a celiac email list I subscribe to, and as a result it was just yesterday that I went out and stocked up on vitamins and mineral.  I went to Wal-Mart and bought these products:

Spring Valley Brand Natural easy to swallow Calcium 600mg with Vitamin D

Equate Complete Multivitamin Supplement

I'm not only eating a GF diet, I also avoid all animal products as a matter of personal preference.  This puts me in a nutritional corner that requires careful choices of what I do eat.  I'm certainly getting plenty of fruit and vegetables, so that is good.
