The purpose of this document is to give detailed practical guidance on the diagnosis and
management of coeliac disease.
.
Coeliac disease affects around 1% of the Northern Ireland population. Although there have been
major advances in our understanding of coeliac disease over the last ten years these have not been
communicated effectively to healthcare professionals.
.
Even after diagnosis, there is wide variation in management and follow-up.
Increased awareness of the condition, in conjunction with improved diagnostic methods, will have a
significant impact on this common condition.
