It's so hard to pass up those yummy fries if I'm splurging on a burger! But you're absolutely right, Steve - they are a major source of hidden gluten. Even if the fries aren't coated with flour before cooking, we need to remember to inquire about what other items are cooked in the same frying oil (onion rings are a major offender at fast food restaurants, while chicken strips, et. al., are common at other types of restaurants.) It's a hassle to remember to all the necessary inquiries sometimes, but I'm often surprised at how many kitchens have a devoted fryer just for the fries.
I don't eat much at fast food restaurants any more, but ever since the low-carb craze kicked into high gear, it's getting easier and easier to find safe meals at these eateries. Lettuce-wrapped burgers, salad as a side dish, fruit sides, etc. Dr. Atkins helped us out a bit!
