GF PASTAS
« on: August 25, 2005, 03:39:18 AM »
Well, Ive been gluten free for 14 months now. I finally found something to do with the tons of gf pastas shoved in my freezer , that ive bought and tried. I have tons of different shapes, sizes, flavors.
I loved what i did with them............... I donated them to a local sunday school for art projects. LOL
EEEWWWWWWWWWWWW is all I have to say about them all. I just cant get my taste buds to accept any of them as food I should eat.
Im amazed, Im vegan, so retrained my eating then, had no problem. I actually love now tofu, soy products, etc...... but gluten free is just gross to me.
Anyone else just hate gf flours?

Hi JUDI42MIL,

I'm sorry that the GF pasta you've tried has been a disappointment for you.

I tend to focus more on the visual appearance and texture of GF pasta, rather than the flavor. Maybe that is why I do not find it unpleasant.

The two best brands I've found are Tinkyada from Canada and Bi-Aglut from Italy.

In particular, I find the Bi-Aglut to be almost exactly the same as regular wheat-based pasta.

On the other hand, the thing I really like about the Tinkyada pasta is that it does not go immediately from cooked to overcooked. The texture of the Tinkyada pasta is great IMHO.

Trader Joe's has recently started selling some GF pasta from Canada. I believe it is relabelled Tinkyada pasta, or at least a good imitation of it.

I do agree that most GF flour mixes are sad. I especially do not like rice flour, although I love whole grain brown rice.  I think that rice flour and breads made with a lot of it tend to have an abrasive mouth feel.

Bean flours have better texture, but of course they taste like beans.  Have you ever tried the Excellent GF Bread Mix from Bob's Red Mill?  It is largely based on bean flour, and it does not have the abrasive texture of rice-based breads.

Hang in there!

Steve

I tried Mrs. Leepers Chicken Fettechini . There is no chicken in it, but there is cheese. I mixed it with chicken but you could use veggies. It was good. I tried Energy
Foods large shell pasta and it was nothing I would buy again. I haven't found the one at T.J.'s but I'll ask next time.  Last time I made muffins with Pamelas flour mix I put cherries, walnuts and chocolate chips.  YUMMY!  What is this caramel thing? Is the caramel in Starbucks drinks and Ben and Jerrys and Hagan Dass ice cream ok?(Anybody guess I have a sweet tooth?) Well, my health has improved imensley since I stopped eating wheat and gluten. Bye, Carol
