Things of interest to celiacs that are not food
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:35:26 AM »
One of our members suggested that we needed a board for discussions about non-food items.  So here it is :-)

For example, some people say that a celiac should not lick the sticky bit to seal an envelope, because the glue might contain gluten.  This sounds like an easy precaution to take.

Other people say that a celiac should avoid soaps and shampoos that contain gluten. I can see how this might be a problem, especially for people with Dermatitis Herpetiformis, a skin rash that only a small percentage of celiacs seem to develop.

What else?

Lipsticks can be a big problem.  The only one I know of that is gluten-free is Mary Kay's Signature series lipsticks.

I need help .  I know I cannot use products with wheat germ oil, when I have I get sick and rashes.  What I need Steve  Scientific Advice on is tocopheryls.  Tocopheryl acetate, all those Vitamin e things. I am a massage therapist and use many oils and lotions on myself and clients.  How do I know whrer the vitamin e comes from?

Also, what store brand lotions are safe? I bought the Clan Thompson" guide to everything else" and it is next to useless for lotion info.  Happy Easter and Spring  to all.  Carol

By the time it can be called vitamin E I don't think it matters anymore where it came from. Vitamin E is going to be a much more basic substance on a molecular level than the protein fragments that bother us.

As far as lotions go, ordinary Lubriderm seems great for moisturizing dry skin, and I live in a desert so I need to know.

I've never heard of any issues related to dental work.   I'd guess there is no cause for concern.  You can always discuss your concerns with the Dentist, he or she should know about the materials used.

I thought "Oh, I can help" when I saw this message.   So I looked for the lip balm I knew I had.

I found it, but I had previously completely removed the label.   If memory serves correctly it is an unflavored Chapstick brand.   It never bothers me.
