Over the past 4 or 5 days I've been troubled with some abdominal pain, at times, like last night from Midnight to 7AM it has been very severe.  I tossed and turned all night last night, and then today I called in sick to my job for the first time in years.

I kept having the sensation that I needed to have a bowel movement, but kept not having one. The pain was as intense as any I can recall in my adult life.  I also felt feverish and foggy headed, more foggy headed than usual.

After 7 hours at a medical clinic today, including 3 X-rays, I was told that I probably had an infected colon and a kidney infection.

As people with celiac disease, we are all often inclined to rush to the conclusion that we have been exposed to gluten when our bellies ache. My point in telling you all about this is that we should also be prepared to consider that other things may be causing abdominal distress.

For several days I thought I was just having a grouchy celiac tummy, but it seems clear now that was not the case.

I was in the hospital not too long ago for severe abdominal pain a high fever over 103 degrees.  They never found out what it was (after every test in the book) and concluded that had to be a virus. I was released the next day and ended up right back in the hospital again that night. They still never figured out what was causing it.

Here we are almost two years since I posted the first message in this thread.   As it turned out what apparently happened back in April 2005 was that a fistula formed between my colon and my bladder.  Over the course of the 12 months after this episode of diverticulitis, because of this fistula I had a series of urinary tract infections.

Finally, in April 2006, I had a partial colectomy to correct the problem, and now a year later I'm doing fine.

The point is, not all tummy aches are caused by accidental gluten ingestion.
